Thirty-two drivers from 10 countries will fire up their engines with hopes of winning this year's Middle East Series, which begins today at the Hotel Inter-Continental Abu Dhabi at 9:30 a.m.

Gulf News daily reports that Qatar's hopeful Hamad Al-Suwaidi aims to win the title for his nation when the UAE International Rally launches the 2000 FIA regional series. Al-Suwaidi will be joined by experienced co-driver Mubarak Al-Hajri. Al-Suwaidi will drive a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 5, and has been generously sponsored by ADNOC Distribution.

The Qataris face intense competition in their group N pool, mainly from Al-Shanfari, the UAE's 1998 Middle East group N Champion, and from last year's runner-up, Faris Bustami of Jordan. Last year's prize was won by Oman's Nizar Al-Shanfari.
