An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale was recorded at 0118 GMT Monday near Fiji, said the Strasbourg Earth Sciences Observatory.
The epicenter was located 15.18 degrees south latitude and 176.7 east longitude.
The observatory said the area in the South Pacific is often hit by earthquakes, including one two years ago on September 22, 1998 which measured 4.8 on the Richter scale -- STRASBOURG (AFP)
