Qubad Talabani, Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq (KRG) Representative to the U.S., discussed yesterday the status of Iraq and Kurdistan in separate meetings with Representative Patrick Kennedy (D-RI), Representative James McGovern (D-MA), Representative Adam B. Schiff (D-CA) and Representative John Shadegg (R-AZ).
During the meeting with Rep. Kennedy, Mr. Talabani thanked the Congressman for the support the Kurdistan Region received from his father, the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy, a long time champion of the Kurds. In the 1980s, Senator Kennedy spoke out about the atrocities committed against the Kurds and Mr. Talabani expressed his gratitude for these efforts to protect the Kurdish people of Iraq.
Mr. Talabani met with Representatives Kennedy, McGovern, Schiff and Shadegg, to seek assurance that U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq will indeed be "responsible" as outlined by President Obama. Mr. Talabani explained the importance of continued U.S. engagement in Iraq to ensure that sacrifices made by Americans in Iraq will lead to a sustainable democratic and stable country. The meetings come on the heels of President Obama's announcement to dispatch 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan.
As Representative of the KRG to the United States, Mr. Talabani works closely with the U.S. Government and research institutions to provide critical analysis and up-to-date information on Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
