Lea Rabin, the widow of late Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, was hospitalized Saturday only hours before she was to speak at a gathering commemorating the assassination of her husband, Israeli public radio reported.

Rabin was taken to hospital in Petah Tiqva, outside of Tel Aviv, suffering from chest pains.

It was unclear whether she would be able to attend the gathering, marking the fifth anniversary of her husband's murder by a right-wing Israeli extremist angered over Rabin's peacemaking efforts with the Palestinians.

Israeli President Moishe Katsav and Prime Minister Ehud Barak are among those scheduled to attend.

The Israeli press reported in May that Rabin had been undergoing treatment for lung cancer – JERUSALEM (AFP)
