The first annual RAK Terry Fox Run, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, will be held on Friday, 5 March, 2010. Registration/submission of sponsorship forms will begin at 7.30am on the RAK Corniche with the runs starting at 9am. The event will feature both a 5km distance aimed more at runners and joggers and a 3km distance for adults, children and families to walk, skateboard, rollerblade, cycle, jog or even just to push the baby stroller in!
Terry Fox was a young Canadian amputee who attempted to run across Canada in 1980 to raise awareness of the need for more money and effort to be given to cancer research. Sadly, Terry\'s bone cancer returned during his run and he died shortly after at the age of just 22. His dream to further cancer research, however, lives on and Terry Fox Runs are held around the world every year to bring communities together to raise money for cancer research. (www.terryfoxrun.org)
100% of all money raised is remitted to research institutions that are accredited by the International Union Against Cancer in Geneva. The funds raised from the first RAK Terry Fox Run will be donated to the UAE University Hospital in Al Ain where a number of ongoing and impressive cancer research projects are being conducted.
The RAK Terry Fox Run Organizing Committee invites everyone across the UAE to join in raising sponsorship funds and participating in the first RAK Terry Fox Run on 5 March. Funds are being raised either through direct donations or by individual sponsorship sheets, available from the contacts below or online. All sponsorship forms will be collected on the morning of the run and exchanged for a run wristband to participate in the chosen distance.
Short films about Terry Fox and his Foundation are available if your school or business would like to learn more. Our committee would be more than happy to meet with you to present the film and answer questions.
