Tehran is entering the second phase of a war against more than one million rats that roam through the streets and alleys of the capital.

On Saturday, municipal officials will carry out a second campaign of mass poisoning against the rodents. Last March, officials used 10 tons of poison in the capital and killed 560,000 rats. The government allocates a budget every year specifically for this plague.

Massoud Khalili, Tehran's zoning director, told the United Arab Emirates news agency that city officials have managed to pinpoint the main area where the rats multiply, making it easier to eliminate the rodents. Officials found that the underground water drainage system in Shuharan, a city of 10 million people, is a primary breeding place for the rats that came to Tehran from Iran's southern and northern ports, according Sawsan Jafari, secretary general of the national committee to combat rats.
