The Boko Haram conflict has caused "one of the most serious humanitarian crises in Africa," the International Red Cross said Thursday.
AFP reported that the organization said that additional funding for victims' support was needed urgently.
The president of the ICRC Peter Maurer made the statement in Nigeria's capital Abuja. On his trip he visited two northeast cities, Maiduguri and Yola, where hundreds of thousands of people have fled due to fighting.
"I came back with the strong impression that I have seen a tip of the iceberg," Maurer said.
He told reporters that there was an increased need for further support for victims of sexual violence. There has been evidence that Boko Haram fighters raped women and girls they had kidnapped.
Violence in Nigeria has left 15,000 people dead since 2009 and forced another 1.5 million from their homes.
