US attacks on a Taliban front line in northeastern Afghanistan have left so many troops dead that the bodies have been left to rot where they fell, refugees from a village in the region told AFP Saturday.
The refugees, who managed to flee last week from the village of Dasht-i-Artshi to territory controlled by the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance, recounted tales of having seen more than 100 bodies lying in the open.
Dasht-i-Artshi is around ten kilometres from the frontlines in the region, which is close to the border with Tajikstan.
The villagers said that Taliban troops would come and hide in their houses and mosques during attacks and had forced some of them to fight with them or to go and recover and bury bodies on the frontlines.
