Four thousand civil defense guards in Algeria have resigned from the force, complaining of being abandoned by the authorities, reported the BBC.online, quoting local newspaper.

Es-Sahafa newspaper reported that they were no longer being supplied with ammunition, nor being paid.

The community defense groups were set up seven years ago to help the army contain a campaign of violence launched a year earlier by Islamic militants, said the BBC.

Most of the guards who have resigned recently come from areas west and east of the capital, Algiers, where there's been a sharp increase in attacks by militants, said the paper - Albawaba.com
