Report: Egypt, Other Arab States Make Efforts To Arrange Cheney – Arafat Meeting

Egypt and several Arab states are currently making intensive diplomatic efforts to focus attention on the need to achieve a solution to the deteriorating situation between the Palestinians and the Israelis during US Vice-President Dick Cheney's tour in the Middle East, the London-based Al-Sharq al-Awsat has reported.  

 

These countries have decided to make these efforts because violence has increased and the security situation has escalated to an unprecedented level. 

 

To this end, contacts currently taking place among the various parties in order to organize a meeting between Cheney and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in the Palestinian territories.  

 

The Arab officials taking part in these diplomatic efforts believe that the United States acceptance of a meeting between Cheney and Arafat and lifting the siege on Arafat will be tantamount to restoring dignity to the Palestinian leadership and people, the daily reported. 

 

Cheney, who began his talks in London on Sunday, will visit Amman on Tuesday for discussions with King Abdullah, with Iraq expected to be high on the agenda. Cheney's tour will also include Kuwait, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Turkey, Oman, Israel and Yemen. (Albawaba.com)
