Jordan's government is being urged to improve diplomatic relations with Baghdad to ensure access to the Iraqi market, according to Middle East Newsline (MENL), citing an official report.

A report by the semi-official Higher Council for Science and Technology said improved ties with Iraq could ensure Jordanian projects success amid competition from Syria and Gulf Arab countries for the Iraqi market. The report said Jordan should initiate projects in the oil and transportation sectors.

The study said this should include the construction of a pipline from Iraqi oil fields to Jordan. Other projects include a railway that links Iraq and Jordan.

Jordan remains heavily dependent on Iraqi oil. The study urged the kingdom to search for alternative sources of energy.

"It is not clear how long Iraq will continue to supply Jordan at preferential rates," the report said. "This will depend largely on the future of political ties between the two countries." – Albawaba.com
