Israel wants the United States to continue its substantial military aid to Egypt, Haaretz reported Tuesday.
Citing an unnamed American official, the newspaper said that numerous top Israeli officials had asked their American counterparts not to cut off the annual $1.3 billion aid package following Egypt's recent turmoil.
The report continued to say that Israeli officials were worried that a U.S. aid cutoff would hurt Israeli's security, especially regarding the restive Sinai region. The United States' military assistance to Egypt began with the Camp David Accords, Israel's peace treaty with Egypt, and Israel worries that any change in U.S. aid could affect the pact, the report said.
U.S. law requires that aid be cut off to governments that seize power in military coups. So far, the Obama administration has avoided assigning that label to the Egyptian military's takeover from Muslim Brotherhood-backed President Mohamed Morsi.
