New York area airports were open early Thursday to receive flights rerouted nearly two days ago when two hijacked passenger jets crashed into the World Trade Center causing their collapse, TV 1 reported.
Eighteen to 19 flights diverted across the Canadian border were said to be en route to Newark and Kennedy, the report said.
Earlier, Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman said, "Tonight we are going to reopen the airports in New York -- LaGuardia, JFK and Newark -- for the incoming flights that were diverted during the attack on the World Trade Center."
All outbound service remains grounded.
American, Delta, Continental, Norhtwestern and other airlines said they had cancelled their flights until at least noon Thursday.
Major US airlines are awaiting further notification from the Federal Aviation Administration Thursday, after issuing statements saying that they expected to resume national flights -- NEW YORK (AFP)
