The Turkish armed forces are preparing to restructure their chains of command under a project to be completed by 2006 aimed at increasing the army's efficiency, a Turkish newspaper reported Sunday.

The project foresees the dissolution of different commands for the ground, naval and air forces, and the establishment of a single headquarters under the chief of the general staff, the mass-circulation Sabah said.

In the new structure, the head of the general staff will have three deputies, who will be responsible for each of the armed forces, the report said.

The project is expected to speed up decision-making, decrease bureaucracy within the armed forces and increase the army's efficiency.
