A Yemeni man, wanted for questioning by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation in its probe into last week's deadly terror attacks, has been detained in Canada and awaits a decision on his possible extradition to the United States, Canadian media reported Saturday.
Najib Abdel Jabar Mohammed al-Hadi appeared in court in Toronto Friday on an extradition request from the United States, Clare Barry, an attorney with the Canadian Justice Department, told the Globe and Mail newspaper. She said he would remain in custody until at least Tuesday, when another court appearance was scheduled.
A criminal complaint filed against Hadi in the United States alleges that he attempted to use a fake passport, the daily said, adding that he reportedly holds three Yemeni passports -- each bearing a different name and date of birth.
Hadi was on board a Chicago-bound Lufthansa flight from Germany on September 11 when his plane was rerouted to Toronto during the US ground stop that followed the attacks, the newspaper said.
The Yemeni national works for a Lufthansa contractor, and officials reportedly found two Lufthansa uniforms in his luggage, which arrived ahead of him in Chicago.
Knight-Ridder News reported separately that a complaint in Chicago charges Hadi with attempting to enter the United States with fraudulent documents and that Hadi was carrying German airline crew uniforms on the flight -- OTTAWA (AFP)
