Prisoners wielding sticks and sharp makeshift weapons battled guards at a jail near Beirut on Friday in violence that injured 11 people, Lebanese security sources said.

The clashes erupted after 15 prisoners on trial for allegedly participating in a bloody Islamist uprising in 2000 refused to go to court, complaining of delays in their trial.

Four guards and seven prisoners were injured in the clashes, but security sources said they had regained control of Roumieh Prison. According to The Daily Star, two inmates, Ehab Banna and Said Minawi, were seriously injured. The riots forced the trial's adjournment to Feb. 21. (Albawaba.com)
