ALBAWABA - In a statement released on Saturday, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) said that American and British intelligence services were planning assaults on Russian military installations in Syria.
ISIS fighters who were recently freed from custody by Syria's new transitional government are allegedly being used to plan the claimed activities.
The SVR claims that Washington and London want to further destabilize Syria after the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in an effort to solidify the instability in the Middle East. Both countries, according to the statement, are attempting to establish sustained domination in the area under the pretense of their "rules-based order."
As a stabilizing factor opposing these ambitions, the Russian agency emphasized the importance of its military presence on Syria's Mediterranean coast. According to the SVR, attack drones have been sent to ISIS members so they may strike Russian infrastructure. Furthermore, it is said that American and British military coordinated attacks on ISIS objectives, informing the terrorists beforehand to prevent real harm.
The statement framed the new Syrian government as incapable of managing terrorist threats and said that these provocations are meant to compel Russia to leave Syria. The statement said that this strategy "reveals the true intentions of Anglo-Saxon powers, who claim to support stability and democracy in Syria."
Russia also pointed out Washington's unwillingness to restore these lands to Damascus and denounced the continued American control of oil-rich regions east of the Euphrates River under the guise of fighting ISIS.
Syria's military government refuted recent accusations that Syrian troops had captured Russian personnel stationed at Khmeimim Air Base or infiltrated the base. Syria's transitional authorities want to uphold current accords allowing Russian bases in Latakia and Tartus, according to a previous report from the TASS news agency.
