ALBAWABA - A major prisoner exchange involving 115 troops from each side has been completed, according to announcements from Russia and Ukraine. Russian troops arrested in the Kursk area and Ukrainian soldiers detained by Russia were swapped, with assistance from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The exchange comprised 115 Ukrainian soldiers, as reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense, while the 115 Russian servicemen were repatriated from regions under Ukrainian control.
Now that these Russian troops are in Belarus, they are able to communicate with their families and are getting medical and psychological help. It is anticipated that all servicemen who have been freed would be returned to Russia.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, commended the UAE for playing a pivotal role in the swap. Zelenskyy posted on social media, saying, "Today, 115 servicemen from our State Border Guard Agency, Armed Forces, Navy, and National Guard have come home. Our goal is to return all of our soldiers. We appreciate the support from the UAE."
The discussion comes after fierce combat broke out in the Kursk area on August 6 as a result of a surprise attack by Ukrainian forces. According to latest reports from Zelenskyy, Ukrainian army have taken control of 92 towns in Kursk and recaptured over 1,250 square kilometers.
