Russia calls for calm on Turkish - Syrian border

Syrian authorities have assured Russia that the bombing in Turkey which killed several civilians, was a "tragic incident." Moscow considers as am important step to officially announce this, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"We got in touch through our ambassador with the Syrian authorities, who have assured us, as well as international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, that what happened in the border with Turkey was an incident tragic, and it would not happen again, "said Lavrov.

In Moscow, the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Alexander Loukachevitch called for "restraint." "We call on both sides to exercise restraint, to respect the mutual sovereignty," he said. "We believe it is important to adopt this measured approach, based on facts," he added.

On Wednesday, shells fired from Syria left five people dead and nine wounded in Akcakale, located on the border with Syria. A few hours later, Turkey fired in retaliation towards the Syrian town of Tell al-Abyad, killing "several Syrian soldiers," according to an NGO. The Turkish army resumed Thursday morning its artillery on the Syrian territory, confirmed Turkish security sources.
