Russia said today that increased sanctions against Iran will not resolve the problem of Tehran's nuclear program, Reuters reported.
"Any additional sanctions are actually aimed at the economic strangulation of Iran, but not at solving the problem of non-proliferation", Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov told Interfax news agency, in response to news that the U.S. House of Representatives is extending sanctions against the Gulf country.
"What has been done through the Security Council is quite adequate and sufficient", Mr Gatilov added.
The bill that was passed in Congress Wednesday would reduce Iran's exports to practically nil, thereby rendering it extremely difficult to fund the country's nuclear program.
With relatively moderate Hassan Rouhani soon to be sworn in as Iran's next President, world powers are hoping the politician may be swayed into putting an end to the country's nuclear work, as many countries fear Iran is trying to make a nuclear bomb.
