Russian air strikes have forced Daesh fighters to retreat to the outskirts of Palmyra, a day after they stormed the ancient city in eastern Syria, a war monitor said.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the militants were now fighting in orchards on the fringes of the city which they captured on Saturday.

The Russian Defence Ministry also said Syria’s army had repelled all attacks by Daesh militants on the ancient city of Palmyra overnight with support from Russian air strikes.

The ministry said Russian jets carried out 64 sorties during the operation, killing more than 300 militants.
