Russian space control has lost all contact with the orbiting Mir space station, Interfax cited undisclosed sources in the space agency saying Tuesday.

The last radio contact with the aging spacecraft was established at 3:00 PM (1200 GMT) Monday, the source said.

As a rule, space control makes contact with the station, which is currently uninhabited and due to be scrapped, once or twice a day.

The source said efforts had been made to contact every 90 minutes on Tuesday, but to no avail.

Another attempt would be made around 1100 GMT, the source said.

Officials at the Russian space agency were not immediately able to comment on the report when contacted by telephone -- MOSCOW (AFP)
