Russian prosecutors demanded the maximum 20-year jail sentence Wednesday for US spy suspect Edmond Pope, his defense lawyer told journalists.

"The prosecutor asked for 20 years and seven billion rubles (250 million dollars) in damages," said Pavel Astakhov.

Prosecutor Yury Volgin on Wednesday began to sum up the prosecution case against 54-year-old Pope, whose closed-door trial opened on October 20.
