A new audiotape attributed to Saddam Hussein aired Monday by Qatar-based Al-Jazeera television said the toppled Iraqi leader or his supporters were not involved in Friday's car bombing in Najaf, which killed 129 people, including the top Shia leader Ayatollah Baqer al Hakim.
"The infidel invaders are accusing, without proof, the followers of Saddam Hussein after the killing of Shi'ite leader al Hakim," the voice said. "This is not what Saddam attributes to himself."
Saddam stressed he is not a leader of a minority or a single Iraqi group. “(Saddam Hussein) is the leader of all people of Iraq: Muslims, non-Muslims, Shia, Sunnis, Kurds and all other groups,” he said.
