Samsung, the world's second largest laser engine manufacturer, has expanded its printer offerings with the launch of its first 6x4-inch photo printer range. The SPP-2040 and SPP-2020 are the company's first PC-independent dye-sublimation photo printers, and are targeted at users wanting to print high quality photos from a variety of digital mediums.

“Samsung is launching a versatile photo printer range which offers consumers genuine flexibility in the way they produce their digital photographs,” said Mr. K. H. Koh, General Manager, Digital Information Technology division, Samsung Gulf Electronics (SGE). “Users have the option of PC-independent and wireless connectivity from a number of digital devices and the option to edit their photos. The end result is a high quality printed image delivered cost-effectively in a minute.”

The relatively compact (180x136x67mm) and lightweight models both sport 300x300dpi print engines and a fast 60-second print speed, considered fastest on the market. The SPP-2040 further enables editing of pictures directly using a 7-in-1 memory card interface, formatting controls, and a 2.0-inch. LCD preview screen. Both models connect to a computer using a USB 2.0 connection and support Bluetooth and PictBridge wireless printing.

“Unlike inkjet printers, dye diffusion thermal transfer (dye sublimation) ensures that there is never a color level issue, which occurs when one colour of cartridge on an inkjet goes low. The SPP-2020 and SPP-2040 have a built-in ability to balance colour levels, even when printing multiple copies, so they should always output rich colour prints with pleasing flesh tones,” said Mr. Lancy Menezes, Sales and Marketing Manager, Digital Printing Division.

The SPP-2020 comes with 1MB Flash and 16MB DRAM and a 40-sheet cassette tray, while the SPP-2040 integrates 4MB Flash and 32MB DRAM. Prints also output with a water and fade resistant coating and are protected against the damaging effects of sunlight and humidity. The printer supports operating systems, including Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, and Mac OS 10.3. Both the printers will be on showcase at Samsung’s pavilion in GITEX - Hall B2-1.
