A Saudi daily Monday called upon Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to take the courageous step of standing down to save Iraq from a US war and restore unity to the Arab world.
"By taking such a stance to rescue Iraq, Saddam will not be seen as a defeated man. It is a wise, reasonable and heroic decision that may spare him from being pursued legally," Al-Riyadh said.
"Baghdad must see the serious consequences with eyes wide open ... Foiling the American pretexts and justifications (for war) requires personal courage from Saddam Hussein," a front-page editorial read.
The daily added that a reasonable stance from Baghdad would enable Arabs to unite in dealing with Washington and have an impact on international developments.
"The (Arab) summit will not provide miracles, or resolve complex issues," but through a responsible position by Iraq, it can succeed in transforming the Arab world into an entity that respects itself and the world, it said. (Albawaba.com)
