Saudi Arabia's embassy in India Saturday denied a newspaper report that two of its nationals were detained on charges of spying for Pakistan.

A spokesman for the embassy said a report carried in the Saudi daily Asharq al-Awsat that two Saudi brothers were arrested in India on Sunday, two days before India's Independence Day, was false.

The newspaper said the men were arrested in the eastern state of Bihar and were spying for Pakistan.

The diplomat said the men were arrested in Bihar on Thursday for travelling without valid documents.

"They were found to be travelling without visas and the Indian foreign ministry asked us to take them and send them back," he said.

"There are no, I repeat no, charges of espionage."

The official said the men could have been mistaken for siblings because they came from the same tribe and shared a common surname -- NEW DELHI (AFP)
