Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal called on Washington Sunday to seek broad international support before launching any military operation against Baghdad.
"We hope the decision to go that road should be a consensus," al-Faisal said in an interview with Newsweek.
He said the Saudi Arabian government was appreciative of the stance adopted by the Bush administration, who believes war should be the United States' last resort in dealing with Iraq's President Saddam Hussein.
"We are not people who believe the United States wants war regardless of what the considerations are, and I think the president has shown wisdom and patience in his policy, and this is why we have optimism that war can be avoided," the Saudi foreign minister said.
In addition, he said the Saudis were concerned about the dire consequences the conflict could have not for the government of Saddam, but for the people of Iraq. (Albawaba.com)
