Iraq’s President Saddam Hussein should "take a historical decision" and step down to save Iraq from certain destruction, an influential Saudi newspaper said Saturday.
"There is no other choice before the Iraqi regime ... except sparing Iraq and its people the misery of war and its destruction," stated Okaz.
"It will be wise for the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to take a brave, responsible and historical decision in which he compares the future of his country and his people to the future of the regime, which is difficult to defend," the editorial said.
"It is obvious to everyone that the war will not only destroy Iraq and harm its people, but will also eliminate everything".
"As long as the loss will be smashing, comprehensive and enormous, the historical decision the world is waiting for is one that favors the interests of this great country and people, and the interests of the (Arab) nation and people."
Furthermore, Okaz called on the United States to guarantee the safety of top members of the Iraqi regime if they quit voluntarily. (Albawaba.com)
