Schools in Jordan's border town of Ramtha have been shuttered due to heavy fighting just over the border in Deraa, Syria, local newspaper al-Ghad reported Thursday.

Jordan's Ministry of Education spokesperson announced that all government and private schools would be suspended due to severe clashes a few kilometers away.

Wednesday night the sound of bombs could be heard inside Ramtha and the nearby city of Irbid.

So far, no shells have fallen inside the Jordanian border, but stray shelling has hit Ramtha before, sometimes injuring and killing residents.

The Syrian regime has recently stepped up efforts to reclaim the southern city of Deraa.
