ALBAWABA - Israeli media reports that informal talks are taking place in Israel on a possible pardon for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in his ongoing corruption trials.
According to Channel 12, communications have occurred between President Isaac Herzog's office and Netanyahu's defense team, which is headed by attorney Amit Hadad. Nadav Bleileh, a restaurant and businessman, is claimed to have helped the talks by acting as a messenger between the parties. Later, Bleileh denied having any official involvement, claiming that the parties are only personal acquaintances and that he is not interested in politics.
In three cases that date back to 2019 indictments, Netanyahu is accused of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. Prison time could result with a conviction.
Herzog has urged all parties to think about an out-of-court settlement as a first step before deciding on a presidential pardon in tandem with the alleged talks. According to the president's office, Netanyahu's legal staff and important legal figures including the state prosecutor and attorney general would be involved in these initiatives.
According to officials, Herzog does not now intend to pardon anyone; instead, he wants to see if a diplomatic solution can be achieved first. Netanyahu has consistently insisted on his innocence and rejected plea deals.
Citing severe rifts in Israeli society over his trial, the prime minister filed a request for pardon in November. Israel's involvement in several regional conflicts has coincided with the case, which started in 2020.
Donald Trump has also publicly called on Herzog to consider Netanyahu's pardon.
