At least seven people have died of rabies in west Sudan since an outbreak in late May caused by rabid stray dogs, a press report said Monday.
The independent Al-Ayam daily said official records showed the dogs had bitten 262 people, seven of whom died in Nyala alone, capital of South Darfur State.
The daily cited a local health official as saying there were reports of rabies cases also appearing in nearby West Darfur and West Kordofan states with health authorities complaining of acute shortages in anti-rabies drugs and vaccines.
It said dogs constituted 90 percent of the rabid animals, but the disease was also present in cats, donkeys and cattle, causing a widespread panic among the population – KHARTOUM (AFP)
