Seven people have been killed in an attack by southern Sudanese rebels on the government-held town of Bentiu in southern Sudan's Unity State, the State Governor was quoted as saying in a statement to the independent daily al-Sahafi al-Dawli newspaper on Friday.

Governor John Dore Majok was Saturday quoted by the daily as saying rebel forces of Peter Gadet, an ally of the mainstream rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), "in an attempt to infiltrate" the Unity State capital, "shelled the town, killing seven civilians."

Majok said government army troops and the friendly Forces (pro-government south Sudanese militia) "thwarted the attempt and inflicted heavy losses in lives and equipment on the rebels."

He said the situation "is now calm" in the capital of the oil-rich State -- KHARTOUM, Oct 20 (AFP) -
