Israel's Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is considering a request by the head of the government Disengagement Administration to delay by three weeks the first evacuations of settler homes, until after a Jewish traditional mourning period which ends on 14th of August.

Disengagement chief Yonaton Bassi proposed the delay during the weekly session of the cabinet on Sunday, said Bassi's spokesman, Haim Altman.

Bassi raised the issue after "an internal struggle and talking to rabbis" and explained that Jews are not allowed to move to a new home during the mourning period, Altman told the Associated Press.

If Bassi's proposal is accepted, the disengagement would begin on Monday, August 15.
