Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, has donated $1 million to support the Arab Cultural Fund, a new organization formed by Arab League in December in order to confront and correct misconceptions about Islam in the world.
The decision to form the Arab Cultural Fund was taken due to the damage to the image of the Arabs and of Islam in the international media following the September 11 attacks in the USA. Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa called together Arab intellectuals from all 22 member-states in order to work out an Arab plan of action.
The conference adopted recommendations on means of dealing with "attempts to distort Arab culture and Islamic civilization", and Secretary-General Moussa called upon all citizens, Arab agencies, banks and even governments to support the proposed fund.
Sheikh Zayed was the first to answer the Secretary Geenral’s call, and announced he would donate $1 million to the new fund, and in a recent political dossier issued to the Gulf News newspaper, the Zayed Centre for Coordination and Follow-Up has now these confirmed this donation. (www.albawaba.com)
