The Royal Dutch Shell Group will lead an inquiry into the cause of a fire that engulfed an exploratory oil well in central Oman last week following a four-day leakage, reported the Gulf News on Tuesday.

Shell has a 34 percent share in Petroleum Development Oman (PDO).

"A full-time investigation headed by a Royal Dutch Shell Group expert shall start their inquiry into the incident today," a PDO statement said, two days after the arrival of special equipment and three experts from the United States.

They are trying to quell the fire raging for about a week at Zualiyah-16, some 600km from Muscat.

A PDO spokesman told the Gulf News that the investigation would cover all aspects of the incident - from leakage to fire and related matters.

He confirmed that this was the second incident of its kind in 10 years - Yibal-266 in northern Oman caught fire in 1990 - Albawaba.com
