Six Russian soldiers were killed, and 11 others wounded, in rebel attacks on federal positions in the breakaway republic of Chechnya, news agencies cited the Russian military as saying early Tuesday.

Russian army roadblocks and buildings had been attacked 22 times on Monday, the official source said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin told top military commanders in Moscow on Monday that the Kremlin would not seek "victory at any price" in the 13-month war in Chechnya, referring to the army's low morale and high casualties.

Russian forces have officially lost 2,600 troops in Chechnya since Moscow launched operations there in October, 1999 -- MOSCOW (AFP)
