Sixty Beaches Declared Polluted in Morocco

Sixty of Morocco's 270 beaches have been declared polluted and unsuitable for swimming this summer season, press reports said Monday.

The beaches included some along the Mediterranean coast such as M'diq and Ristinga, and others on the Atlantic coast between Tangiers and Sidi Ifini including Rabat-Sale and Skhirat, the left-wing newspaper Liberation reported.

Nevertheless, the results of the annual survey showed a steady improvement in acceptability for swimming, from 63 percent of beaches in 1997 to 74.1 percent as of the end of 1999 - RABAT (AFP)
