Bahraini fish sellers are appealing for help as sweltering heat at the country’s central market threatens their livelihoods, reported the Gulf Daily News on Sunday.
“There is no air conditioning at the fish market in Manama, which puts off customers,” according to traders.
Some say they have to throw out unsold fish at the end of each day.
“The air conditioning broke down two years ago and business has been difficult ever since,” said Sayed Hashim, a fish vendor.
"I pay my rent regularly and it is my right to complain about the things that affect my business and it's somebody else's job to fix it," he said yesterday.
The fishmongers have teamed together to approach Central Municipal Council officials about the issue many times, said trader Aqeel Saeed.
"A letter was sent to the concerned officials about a week ago, but we only got promises that they would sort it out."
When the fishmongers first moved from a nearby building into the market in 1995, everything was working well, including the air-conditioning, he said.
"It was a relief to customers entering the building, they took their time, walking around looking at the different types of fish," he added.
"But now, customers are so bothered by the heat, humidity and stuffy atmosphere, that most of them buy from the stands near the door and leave quickly." – Albawaba.com
