South Korea's 2002 World Cup Organizing Committee is set to convene a meeting to discuss the possible dismissal of the committee's head, Park Seh-Jik, officials said Friday.

Yonhap News Agency said Seh-Jik has come under criticism over his authoritarian style and alleged lack of transparency in managing the committee, whose budget is estimated at $16.2m for this year and has 100 employees.

Cho Chung-Yun, a director of the Korea Football Association (KFA) said that the culture and information ministry informed him that the committee would soon hold an extraordinary general meeting for that purpose.

An official of the ministry told AFP on condition of anonymity that there was a move within the 67-member committee to fire Seh-Jik.

The committee is reportedly under strong influence from the ministry, which has been deeply involved in recommending committee members.

Seh-Jik could not be reached for comment. A spokesman for the committee declined to comment on the reports.

Under the committee's constitution, the chairman can be fired at a general meeting if more than half of the committee members attend and more than half of those approve it. South Korea will co-host the 2002 World Cup with Japan - (AFP)
