Spanish defense ministry said last night the Spanish army will take part in the "Bright Star 2001" drills that will start Monday and last until next November 10, reported the Kuwaiti News Agency (KUNA).
A ministry spokesman was quoted as saying that the Spanish soldiers would participate in the drills along with troops from Egypt, Kuwait, Jordan, the United States, France, Britain, Germany and Greece.
As many as 540 Spanish soldiers will take part in the event.
Since its inception in 1981, Bright Star's biannual exercises brought together elite forces from Egypt and several NATO countries in what a veteran journalist termed "the most important simulated war on desert terrain."
Bright Star was interrupted in 1991 when the real thing took place on the borders of Kuwait and Iraq during Gulf War II – Albawaba.com
