Russian deputy foreign minister Alexander Avdeyev will visit Israel soon to try to help get Middle East peace talks back on track, a spokesman for an Israeli delegation in Moscow said on Wednesday.
"Under a preliminary accord between both sides, Avdeyev will travel to Israel soon," Isaak Gertsog told RTR public television.
He made the announcement as US President Bill Clinton continued efforts to persuade the Israelis and Palestinians to accept a peace accord before the end of his mandate on January 20.
Russia is a co-sponsor of the Middle East peace process.
Gertsog had accompanied Dany Yatom, a security adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, who made a brief visit to Moscow on Wednesday for talks with Russian officials, including Avdeyev, Interfax news agency said.
"Russia is following Middle East developments closely," said a foreign ministry spokesman -- MOSCOW (AFP)
