Government forces have killed at least 392 Tamil Tiger rebels in clashes on the northern peninsula of Jaffna in the past two weeks, the government's Special Media Information Center (SMIC) said Saturday.
The separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) had admitted losing 392 fighters since the military launched a fresh offensive on September 3, the SMIC said.
There was no immediate rebel reaction to the SMIC claim. The SMIC did not give the corresponding military losses.
However, the government statement said that 50 Tamil Tiger rebels were killed in fresh fighting in the past 24 hours in the island's embattled northern and eastern regions.
The LTTE is leading a drawn-out campaign for independence in the island's northeast. More than 60,000 people have been killed in the Tamil separatist conflict -- COLOMBO(AFP)
