Star French TV Commentator in Trouble with Euro Organizers

Published July 1st, 2000 - 02:00 GMT

Star French football commentator Jean-Michel Larque has had his press credentials withdrawn by the Euro 2000 organizers after allegedly punching a steward.

The alleged incident happened after Sunday's France-Portugal semifinal in Bruges, the organizing committee chairman Alain Courtois said Saturday.

A steward has charged that the former international midfielder tried to approach the French team bus to talk to the players although he did not have the proper accreditation.

The steward said that Larque hit him after he had blocked the commentator's path.

Asked if Larque's accreditation might be restored in time for Sunday's Euro 2000 final here between France and Italy, Courtois replied" "I don't think so."

The European governing body UEFA said that it had no jurisdiction in the matter and that it was up to the steward to file criminal charges against Larque if he wanted.

Along with Thierry Roland, Larque forms France's best known and loved tandem of football commentators.

They have worked for the TF1 private channel for many years and have become something of an institution appearing in TV ads and even on pop songs.

There was no immediate comment from Larque or from TF1 – (AFP)
