Floods triggered by rainstorms have killed 32 villagers and injured 50 others in the Iranian province of Bojnoud, northeast of Teheran, a local official said Monday.

Mahmoud Samini, deputy local governor, told the official Iranian news agency IRNA that casualties may rise as 200 homes have been razed and 2,500 head of cattle perished.

He said that helicopters had also been sent to 12 flood-stricken villages.

The head of Bojnourd Red Crescent Society, Mohammad Ali Khosravi, said that over 200 tents, 1,000 blankets, tons of rice and other food materials had been sent to the flood-hit villagers, according to the agency.

Heavy rain began to fall in mid-afternoon on Sunday in the province, and floodwater quickly surrounded several villages.
