Stormy weather strikes Lebanon

Published November 26th, 2004 - 04:25 GMT

Heavy snow blocked mountain roads across Lebanon and rain floods deluged Beirut and other major cities Friday, causing traffic jams. Scores of private cars, taxicabs and buses were trapped by flood water on many streets in the capital and its southern suburbs.

According to An Nahar, the traffic department said hundreds of motorists were marooned by snow along the central mountain ridge overlooking Beirut as army bulldozers with helicopter support were trying to rescue car occupants.

Schools were closed throughout the Bekaa, most of north Lebanon and the Cedar mountains for a second straight day. In Sidon, winds at 70-kilomter per hour speed uprooted a suburban garbage dump.

Police said no casualties have been reported from the storm anywhere in Lebanon.
