Hamdan Bin Mohammed Program for Sports Leadership Development (HBMPSLD), an innovative leadership program designed to develop future sports national leaders capable of promoting the sustainable development of Dubai in the sports field, has announced that it has recently organized a seminar in Abu Dhabi wherein HBMPSLD participants were given exclusive insights about the process of organizing the prestigious FIFA Club World Cup 2009 being held in the UAE capital. The seminar covered a wide range of topics and included a site visit at the Sultan Bin Zayed Stadium where participants attended a presentation about how to build a world-class stadium.
The topics that were discussed during the seminar included an introduction to the FIFA Club World Cup as well as the legal framework of the tournament. Also discussed were strategies when working with an association, marketing and operation of a tournament, sporting aspects of a tournament, staffing and finances involved in an event of this scale, and legacy of a tournament.
Adel Al Shared, Executive Chairman of HBMPSLD said: "The FIFA Club World Cup is one of the biggest and most anticipated events in the UAE's sporting calendar. We have organized the seminar to focus on the salient aspects of organizing such a world-class sporting event, particularly in areas related to the legal framework, marketing and operations of the tournament. It is important that our sports leaders are able to learn as much from this experience, which will be greatly invaluable when they organize and host much bigger sporting competitions in the future."
Ebrahim Ali Al Ali, participant of HBMPSLD said: "Organizing an event as big as the FIFA Club World Cup is a very big challenge not just for sports leaders but for the entire country. As discussed during the seminar, various requirements need to be addressed to ensure the success of such a high-profile event, and often times these requirements transcend the realm of sports. This only underlines the need for well-rounded sports leaders who are fully capable of dealing with issues and challenges within and outside the sporting world."
The FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2009 is being held in Abu Dhabi from December 9-19, 2009 with the UAE Premier League champion Al-Ahli going up against six continental club champions: Barcelona (UEFA), Estudiantes (CONMEBOL), Atlante (CONCACAF), Pohang Steelers (AFC), TP Mazembe (CAF) and Auckland City (OFC). The seven teams compete for a prize fund of USD 16.5 million, with the champion earning USD 5 million.
Initiated by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council, the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Program for Sports Leadership Development is an administrative and managerial leadership program for all sports fields. The key objectives of HBMPSLD include ensuring a long-term systematized leadership development in sports; initiating changes for a progressive and productive sport society under the ‘Change Agents Program’; convening an elite group of sports leaders to help participants in the program benefit from their experiences; sharing insights about individual leadership styles and values; and helping Dubai Government to successfully implement the Dubai Strategic Plan 2015.
