ALBAWABA - On Tuesday, the Sudanese Ministry of Health declared that 50 new cholera cases of infection had been reported in the country's five states. This brings the overall number of cholera cases in the nation since August to 28,376 patients, including 836 fatalities.

While no new deaths have been reported, the ministry reports that the rate of cholera cases has dropped in the majority of Sudanese states. On August 12, the government announced that Sudan was experiencing a cholera outbreak.

Earlier in October, a UNICEF-chartered plane carrying 1.4 million doses of oral cholera vaccinations arrived in Port Sudan, Sudan, to help protect children from the country's continuing cholera outbreak.

Since the current outbreak began in July 2024, more than 18,000 cholera cases and about 550 deaths have been documented in ten states across the country.

The fresh shipment of vaccinations added to the 404,000 doses given by UNICEF to Sudan last month and will be used in current immunization efforts. The initiatives seek to vaccinate 1.81 million individuals against cholera in the most affected states: Gedaref, Kassala, and River Nile.

"Coming on the heels of war, displacement and famine, the impact of these epidemics could be catastrophic for children," Sheldon Yett, UNICEF Representative to Sudan stated.

"Delivery of the vaccines to health authorities in Sudan and into the arms of communities most at risk is essential for stopping the spread of these deadly diseases" Yett added.
