The Sudanese foreign ministry has carried out intensive preparations for a campaign to lift security council sanctions imposed on Sudan since 1996, reported Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), quoting informed diplomatic sources.
Sources told KUNA that Sudan will conduct a series of contacts and meetings with the 14 member states countries in the Security Council to seek their support regarding the lifting of sanctions especially after the approval of the Arab regional groups as well as organizations representing the Islamic, African and non-alignment groups.
The sanctions, which came as an implementation of 1996 resolutions 1042,1054, 1070, will be discussed in the Security Council in the middle of next November, said the agency.
At the same time, the sources expressed fear that the failure of Sudan to win the Africa seat in the Security Council due to US rejection, will negatively affect the discussions on the lifting the sanctions.
The US permanent envoy in the Security Council, William Holbrooke, said after the failure of Sudan to win the seat last Tuesday, that lifting the sanctions will depend on a decision by the new US president.
The sanctions were imposed on Sudan as the government refused to hand over three suspects implicated in an assassination attempt against Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak who was visiting the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa in 1995.
Last June, Sudan called for lifting the sanctions following support from the Arab group, the non-alignment countries in addition to Egypt and Ethiopia, according to KUNA - Albawaba.com
