The Sudanese government said Thursday it had driven the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) out of the Bonj area in the southeastern Blue Nile region.

General Mohamed Osman Yassin, speaking on government radio, said Khartoum's troops "have defeated the rebels and captured many tanks, howitzers and other weapons in the last battle over Bonj."

"Our forces have cleaned the area of any trace of the rebellion in this decisive battle," boasted Yassin, without indicating when the battle had occurred - KHARTOUM (AFP)
